Quarter 1 Evaluation
Name: Emma Davey Grade: 6 Subject: U.S. History
Class Expectations
This semester we are exploring the geography, history, and government of the United States. During this first quarter we are have studied early European explorers, the early North American colonies, the events leading up to the American Revolution and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We have also been working on learning the locations and abbreviations of the 50 states. Students have been given reading and writing assignments to help them remember important information critical to understanding American history.
Student approach to learning
Emma is a very organized and focused student. She clearly understands the content we cover in history. She is always ready and willing to give an answer when called upon. She is a hardworking student who is concerned with the details of her work. I noticed that she is helpful towards her classmates who are seeking clarification on instructions. Here classroom behavior and study habits set the standard for our class. She is always willing to help a classmate and values what others have to say.

Quarter 1 Grade: AMrs. Denny, Intro to Latin:
Name: Emma Davey Grade: 6 Latin
In this first quarter of Latin, the students have been introduced to Latin pronunciation, parts of speech, and the grammar concepts of gender, number, tense, and parsing. Together, these skills culminate in their ability to translate sentences that include complex subjects, singular and plural verbs, and prepositional phrases. They have also studied the culture topics of Roman geography, housing, family, and names.
Emma seems to enjoy having a specific understanding of the material. In other words, she seems to enjoy knowing the exact right answer for every situation and she often asks clarifying questions to further her knowledge. She sometimes doubts her abilities, though, and begins a question before realizing she knows the answer. In translation, Emma is able to accurately use the morphology and context to inform her English sentence. Bene, Emma!

—Quarter 1 Grade: AMrs. C. Weddington, Pre-Algebra:
Name: Emma Davey Grade: 6 Subject: Math
Course Overview: The goal of this course is to lay the foundation of basic pre-algebraic concepts. The objective is to introduce basic operations, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving techniques. Topics of interest this quarter included: variable expressions, evaluating expressions, basic properties, order of operations, exponents, scientific notation, number theory, decimals, introduction to equations, integers and operations with positive and negative numbers.
Approach to Learning:
Approach to Learning: Emma is a hard-working and conscientious student. She immerses herself in her work and consistently challenges herself to improve her math skills. She asks for additional clarification to ensure she is grasping the math concept being presented. She showed a solid understanding of mathematical expressions / equations, integers, and operations with decimals. She maintains a complete and organized binder. On average, she raises her hand at least 2-3 times daily to answer questions. Moreover, she listened to other classmates, raised interesting questions and contributed sensibly and respectfully to the conversation in class. Additionally, her enthusiasm often gets other students excited about math and wanting to engage more in discussions especially in tutoring. This demonstrates that she is a supportive and helpful classmate. This is further demonstrated by loaning other students her notes and studies with other students math outside of class. Moreover, she always completes test and quiz corrections even when she has an above passing grade. She makes our classroom a positive and engaging learning environment.

Summary of Materials Covered:
In the first quarter of Life Science we explored the main characteristics of life and steps of the scientific method. The class discovered and implemented the tools a naturalist needs in order to be a great observer of the natural world around them. To support this goal, students studied structure, dispersal mechanisms, energy production, energy consumption, and reproductive strategies for each group. We ended the quarter beginning a journaling exercise to document weekly changes in plants we grew in class from seed.
Approach to Learning:
Emma is always seeking to understand the material deeply; and she is not only focused on results but on using assessments in class to grasp where her gaps in knowledge occur and where to direct her attention towards preparation for the next assessment opportunity. Her assessment averages are consistent across the board and she displays a strong power of recalling knowledge not only during assessments but also during class discussion. Although they may not always be correct, Emma answers questions in class logically and will work on clarifying her answer to make sure she fully understands the topic of discussion.

Quarter 1 Grade: AMrs. Piper, Lit/Comp I:
In sixth grade Literature and Composition, Arete recognizes the synergies between grammar, reading, and writing. This quarter we have reviewed our basic understanding of grammar. Students have become familiar with all eight parts of speech in a sentence and select comma rules. For analyzing literature, we began with the first steps of diagramming. Students have learned the application of diagramming parts of speech to analyze the meaning of various works. In literature, students have read the short story Rikki Tikki Tavi by Rudyard Kipling, the novel Shane by Jack Schaefer, as well as the poem, The Village Blacksmith by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. We have discussed the freedom an author has when he or she writes creatively. Through active annotations and writing exercises, students examined description and how certain writing techniques can aid an author in conveying a message. In writing, we reflected our thoughts of literature. Students have been creating their own short stories using figurative language including the use of strong verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, imagery, similes, metaphors, and personification. Students have also been introduced to writing techniques including onomatopoeias and alliteration. Students have also completed their first essay of the year by writing a descriptive narrative. In this essay, students were given the opportunity to write about an event or person they’ve experienced first hand. In this essay, students had to “show not tell” their audience about their chosen topic. This essay demonstrates students’ ability to summarize an idea, to analyze the use of strong words, and to appreciate a writers’ creativity in beautiful works.
In grammar, Emma has exceeded the expectations of our review. Participating in activities and exercises in all grammar reviewed, she has demonstrated an understanding in labeling parts of speech of a sentence as well as diagramming the sentence. This will become a useful tool as we continue to analyze literature, especially Shakespeare in the spring. During our six weeks of reading Shane, Emma participated in class discussions and activities about Schaeffer’s use of description and the theme of how a man is defined in the text. Emma asked pertinent questions to find a deeper understanding of the text. These questions were pivotal moments in classroom discussions as each student was able to take something away. In her descriptive essay, Emma was able to show (not tell) the experience she chose to write about; this skill demonstrated the ability to analyze skills in familiar texts and mirror the craft in her own writing. Much like her class, Emma must continue to work on the use of strong of strong words in her own writing in order to be proficient. It’s been an absolute joy teaching Emma this past quarter. I look forward to what she will bring to future classes.Ms. McAlister, Intro to Poetry:
Emma Davey 6B 6th Grade Poetry and Drama
The first quarter of 6th Grade Introduction to Poetry and Drama has focused primarily on building a sense of comfort with being onstage. Students practiced poetry recitations in groups for their first introduction to the stage, and then proceeded to work on short improvisational skits and acting games. The quarter culminated in auditions and stage crew assignments for the upcoming Shakespeare production.
Emma has had a wonderful first quarter in Poetry and Drama. She has met all deadlines, participates regularly, loves improvisational games, and had an excellent audition. Emma has earned the role of Leonato in our upcoming production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, to be performed at 7:30 p.m. on November 18th. I am very excited to begin more regular work on the play after break!
